Categories, Judging, & Awards
The current categories included in Medallion Award Judging include: Cowboy Poetry, Western Fiction, Western Non-fiction, Western Fiction for Younger Readers, Western Non-Fiction for Younger Readers, Photographic Esseys, Western Cookbooks, Cowboy Humor (Visual), Cowboy Humor (Written) and Western Film and Other Media.

Qualified professionals are selected as judges for the various categories in literature and film. Judges are granted the right to step outside category restrictions if a meritorious work deserves unique recognition, or to withhold an award in any category where the quality or number of entries is deemed not to uphold the standards of the Award and previous winners. A summary of judge's comments will be made available to entrants upon request.

A public announcement is made only of the winners. The Medallion Committee does not disclose the names of the entrants or the judges. The highly prized Medallion plaques are presented to the principal creators and the publisher in each category of literature, to the principal creators of films and other media, including Cowboy Visual Humor (or cartoons).

Plaques will be awarded in Ft. Worth, Texas, during the National Day of The Cowboy Celebration. Winners will be given the exact time and place as part of their notification.
